Stripes Eternal

24 April 2013

From the launch of Coco Chanels' Nautical collection in 1917, to Audrey Hepburns' Breton stripe top in The 1956 feature film, "Funny Face", stripes have become an enduring stylish staple. Fast forward to the Spring/Summer 2013 collections and they continue to feature strikingly on the runway and designers such as Oscar De La Renta, Chloe, and Christian Dior inspire with their interpretations of the classic.

The good news is that this is a trend that is easily adapted from "runway to real" and the High Street Retailers have made it an affordable feature for our wardrobes.
Follow a few simple style guidelines, and you will be able to incorporate stripes successfully into your wardrobe. You will be amazed at how quickly they become one of your own iconic style-staples.

Stylish stripes guideline

1. Remember stripes will effect your silhouette. If you are wanting to promote long and lean, go vertical, if you want to break up your height and add some curves, its horizontal you are looking for.

2. Decide on the width of your stripe. Large, wide stripes will certainly make a bold statement, but they can also overpower, so always consider this aspect of the wider statement stripe. In general, narrower, smaller stripes, will be more flattering. They are also great for breaking up monochromatic pieces, and creating visual impact.

The width of the stripe can also play a part in determining the suitability of a piece for various occasions or environments; for example, pinstripes will generally lend themselves to the corporate/professional scene.

3. Always always, try on stripy garments before purchasing.

4. If you are struggling to find the right striped garment, consider the accessories on offer, like a fabulous scarf or ballet flat which will still allow you to incorporate the trend into your wardrobe.

It's time to get stripy!

The Perfect Pair

10 April 2013

There is no doubt in my mind that life influences fashion, (like my need to wear my biggest and darkest pair of shades today after a long, difficult night) and while there are arguably only a handful of 'universal' keys to style, owning a pair of dark, 'oversized' sunglasses has to be one of them.

The universal cover up for a multitude of sins, including the self induced, and the perfect accompaniment to almost any outfit, this is an accessory investment that will pay for itself 1000 times over.

While it may be true that I am a self confessed sunglasses addict, this issue is not clouding my judgement.
Try it for yourself. You will never look back... just fabulously chic!

Move over skinny

4 April 2013

Well, it's not quite move over 'skinnies', because for most of us the skinny jean / pant has certainly made its way to the A list when it comes to our stylish 'staples'.

We are however making a plea to create room for our latest crush, 'The wide leg pant'.

While this look may be easiest for our long legged beauties to master, it is not impossible for the rest of us to be fabulously flawless in this trend.
It comes down firstly to choosing the right cut and shape for your body type (because different cuts will impact the flow of the garment and therefore your silhouette) and secondly, the attention you pay to styling the rest of your outfit.

If you are of the smaller petite kind, choose a pant that has a slimmer leg line with a subtle flare and always always wear heels!

Flat front, no side pockets, and heels are key to achieving a flawless look if you are aiming to lengthen and create the illusion of smaller hips and thighs.

Ladies blessed with the long and lean - the choice is all yours - super wide, fluid and floaty, slightly structured with a subtle flare.....whatever you try and love.
Remain sky high with your heels or alternatively play it down with your favourite ballet flat. This is a look that is fabulous on you so have fun with it.

Follow my top 4 tips for pulling this look together, and you will be well on your way to chic....

1. Ensure the hem line of the pant is slightly touching the floor and covering your heel. Two words.. long and lean!
2. Balance the volume of the pant with a slim fitted top and/ or cropped jacket
3. Heels, heels, heels.
4. If in doubt, book a session with your stylist ;)
